OVERVIEW: The Tp 45 (also known as Tp 43X2) is a lightweight, wire-guided torpedo developed by Sweden for anti-submarine warfare and limited anti-surface use. It entered service with the Royal Swedish Navy in 1993 and has been exported to Finland and Pakistan.

DETAILS: “Tp” stands for Torped in Swedish nomenclature. The Tp 45 is an upgraded export variant of the domestic Tp 43 series, introduced in 1993 with improvements over its predecessor's homing head and digital signal processing. It measures ~2.8 m in length, has a 400 mm diameter, weighs approximately 320 kg, and uses electric propulsion powered by a silver-zinc battery. The torpedo offers selectable speeds and wire-guided mid‑course control, switching to passive acoustic homing in the terminal phase, optimized for shallow waters and littoral conditions. Pakistan procured the Tp 45 in 1994 for integration on its Type 21 frigates, while Finland used it as an interim system until the introduction of the Torped 47.

TYPE: Lightweight Wire-Guided Dual-Purpose Torpedo (Export Variant)

FUNCTION: Launched from 400 mm tubes aboard submarines, surface ships, or helicopters, the Tp 45 travels under wire guidance during its mid-course phase. It then switches to passive acoustic homing for terminal engagement against submarines, and it can also target light surface vessels.
